“I’d go to Melbourne with Dad and he’d have a Slim Dusty tape on and I was in the passenger seat and that reminds me of how it all started.” Tim said. Attending school until year ten, Tim completed a motor mechanic apprenticeship before moving to work in the family business where he began driving both locally & interstate.. While driving trucks Tim’s interest in Country Music grew, with its relevance to his line of work and life in general. “Country Music relates to the industry, some days are good and some are not that good,” Tim said. “It teaches honesty and good values, and the songs resemble life in a story form.” Tim had an idea for a radio show and was encouraged by Slim Dusty to go to air. “I thought Slim’s always had a lot of trucking albums for the hard working Australian truck driver, and if I could do something little then that could be my way of doing something locally.” “I told him what I was about to do and he sent me down about ten CDs and some promos and that’s how it all sort of started.” In 1998 he began his morning radio show, ‘Truck’n with Tim’ on Gippsland FM, which was embraced by listeners throughout the region. Tim gains most of his satisfaction not just from the music but the response that he gets from these dedicated Country Music followers. “The most enjoyment I can get out of it is to bring the enjoyment to the audience.” He is particularly happy with his mix of audience, which is made up of people of all age groups and contrary to what some think, just as many women as men. Initially finding it difficult to attract well-known country musicians to perform locally, Tim is happy that many artists such as Lee Kernaghan, Sara Storer and Adam Brand now automatically include Gippsland on their tours, knowing the large Country Music following here. His own favourite artists include Adam Harvey, American singer Randy Travis and, of course, Slim Dusty. In his little spare time Tim likes to travel as well as attend concerts with his wife Kathy. He is excited by the opportunities that lie ahead for Country Music and hopes he can play a part. “It’s great to bring the show to commercial radio and hopefully I can help introduce more and more people to Country Music.” Tim now has his own line of merchandise including, T-shirts,singlets, hats, stubby-holders and bumper stickers which are available at ''Battery Power" in Argyle St Traralgon. |
